Above Everything 2014

Above Everything…

Exhibition of recent paintings by Gayatri Mehta at Jehangir Art Gallery, Fort, Mumbai from March 26, to April 1, 2014 between 11 am to 7 pm.

In this Exhibition, the paintings are dedicated to childhood cherished and missed.

They are conceptual compositions rendered with representational images. The pictorial space, the colors the technical part of brushing and rendering is to support the concept.

They are Visuals connecting with viewers at mental, emotional as also intellectual level .Sharing a common code of symbols, metaphors and similes, they speak of the ecstasy, fascination, joy ,innocence and questioning curiosity and doubts of childhood.

The images of children in many paintings look straight into viewers to become part of, and a conversation starts reflecting their own state of mind. The children with different expressions and body language do not remain specific but portray the types of everyday characters intriguing viewers to explore the thought behind.

We are not aware of our childhood till we grow old enough to miss that carefreeness, innocence, ignorance and fascination. While watching children, we savor that which has melted in the struggle to exist, achieve and perpetuate what we gained. What we miss is the feeling of playful existence lived and enjoyed in moments; where children make and break and enjoy both.

We have started enforcing children to become social beings in play groups and whatnots, at an early age; whereby we take away from them, their private world of fascination and carefree exploration of self and world around. We prescribe the world for them which has to be transcribed with their own findings.

For children, play and peers are above everything – even family and food. This series of paintings “ABOVE EVERYTHING………..”- dedicated to our own wonderful, meaningful past.

While painting………“ABOVE EVERYTHING…………”

Colors of childhood never fade. The Child within, triggers me at vague times and I see the world differently. The same world, the same people suddenly become part of an untold tale of fantasy. The calculation of time and space fades and a spell of wonder encompass my being. At this juncture, I enjoy life as it is. This state of losing and finding identity inspire me to paint those pieces of fascination on to the canvas.
Children around, engrossed in their activities, often allure me to peep into their world. I envisage them in the special niche of concepts, which transpose them into a realm of a meaningful entity of my own perception, which gets transformed as paintings, onto the canvas.

I hope, through these paintings, viewers will fascinatingly explore bygone days, down the memory lane and relish the taste of forgotten part of our being.
